Action Learning Workshop

Solve problems, improve performance and build teams with an Action Learning workshop.

Action Learning is a process of group problem-solving, where a trained coach guides a small group to solve organisational problems through reflective questioning, goal-setting and strategic actions.

The purpose of any Action Learning workshop is to concurrently address and solve a problem critical to your organisation, and to build team co-operation and productivity, individual and organisational learning.

While learning about and solving the problem at hand, the group is also practising and learning wider skills in problem-solving, creative and critical thinking, team development, communication and leadership.

Who will benefit from the Action Learning workshop?

The group working on the problem will all benefit from the mutual resolution of a problem, greater ability to work as a team, and the range of learning that comes from the activity.

Your organisation will benefit from the solutions your people identify and implement, from the personal growth of individuals and the overall organisational learning. The solutions typically return many times the cost of your investment in the workshop.

Action Learning workshop approach

An Action Learning workshop starts with a brief explanation of the process used, the role of coach and participants, and the key "ground rules" which have been proven to make the approach so effective.

Next come presentation and clarification of the issue being addressed, development of the overall goal, questioning to bring out all aspects of the problem, generation of ideas, evaluation of feasibility, and commitment to action.

The workshop phase can run from two hours to two days, depending on the complexity of the issue being addressed.

Outcomes from an Action Learning workshop

  • Concrete, implementable solutions to organisational problems and opportunities
  • Improved teamwork and creative solutions from reflective questioning
  • Improved personal, team and leadership skills
  • A major contribution to your "learning organisation"

How do you know that an Action Learning workshop will make a difference?

While the Action Learning approach has been developing for many years, it has emerged this decade as the key problem-solving and leadership development program for giant global corporations such as Boeing and GE, government agencies and not-for-profit organisations. Action Learning has the distinction of achieving two objectives whenever it is used: simultaneously solving problems and building individual and organisational learning.
