Leading Change

The challenge: leading change to "make it stick"

We all know that change is constant, and sometimes it is welcome, sometimes not. If you are trying to implement important change, how can you make sure that change not only happens, but that it "sticks", i.e. becomes the new behaviour or way of doing things? How do you manage denial, resistance, "work-arounds", and returning to the old ways as soon as your attention moves on to the next challenge?

The secret is in leading change, not just managing change, and this workshop will build your skills and ability to "make change stick".

Why is leading change so important?

According to many well-researched studies, lack of leadership is the greatest single cause of failure of change initiatives across a wide range of organisations.

Here are some examples of surveys which found that major change failed because:

  • Lack of top management ownership & support (KPMG Canada survey 1997)
  • Lack of clear senior manager ownership & leadership (UK Gov't. Commerce and National Audit Office websites 2006)
  • In every one of 20 major failed projects, lack of an effective sponsor was common. (Thomsett Company website 2006)
  • 65.4% of all executives surveyed said trustworthy leadership was a critical factor in successful change. (Longenecker, Papp & Stansfield Survey of 181 Senior Manufacturing Executives 2006)
Leading change is all about the people dimensions of change - your communication, consultation and collaboration, developing a shared vision and dealing effectively with the human emotions involved in change.

Our workshop focuses on providing leaders at all levels with the necessary skills and confidence for leading change in their organisation.

What about managing change, as well as leading change?

In addition to leading change and helping people to deal with change, you need a good framework and good processes for planning, executing and maintaining change.

You will learn about proven models of change management, including those of noted change guru John Kotter, and how to tailor and implement them so they will work in your organisation.

Can you give us a magic wand we can wave to bring about instant change in our organisation?

No magic wands! Successful change takes an investment of time, leadership and effort to be successful. Significant cultural change (e.g. in moving from autocratic to collaborative decision-making, or working together across organisational silos, or encouraging and implementing innovation from all levels) can take several years to become "the way we do things here".

Our experienced facilitators give you the tools, techniques and skills for confidently and competently managing and leading change in your organisation so change brings positive and lasting benefits to your people, your customers / clients and to your organisation. The cost of failure to properly lead and manage change makes the investment in building your skills well worthwhile.

What will you learn about managing and leading change?

  • Learn skills to better lead and manage change in your organisation
  • Use appropriate models and tools to develop change strategy, plans and actions
  • Understand the impact of change on individuals and organisations, resistance, and how to help others through change
  • Use stories, case studies and examples to add life to your change processes
  • Identify and communicate the potential opportunities and benefits of change
  • Learn how to ensure sustainability - "making change stick"
